Open Dental stays your practice management system, your schedule and your source of truth. This is an add-on that reads and writes through Open Dental's documented API — not a replacement, and not a migration.
We connect with an API key you issue, against Open Dental's published API. That API is served by the eConnector, which runs on your own server the way it already does for Open Dental's other API clients — so this is not a database connection, and there is no data migration and no conversion. Your Open Dental version and your existing eConnector keep working as they are.
The AI picks up the calls you route to it — after hours, on hold, the second line, or whichever lines you choose. It answers hours, location, insurance-accepted and new-patient questions using the answers you give it, looks the caller up or creates the patient record, finds open time, and books into the live schedule. The appointment exists in Open Dental before the call ends, so the front desk can see it right away.
Appointment status updates and cancellation are not supported on Open Dental's API, so the AI does not attempt them and those stay manual for your team. When a caller wants to cancel or move a visit, the AI identifies the patient, takes down what they're asking for, and passes the request to your team to make the change in Open Dental. Clinical questions, billing disputes and anything the caller asks to escalate are routed the same way rather than answered.
Setup is credentials and a phone number, not a migration. You issue an API key from Open Dental and confirm the eConnector — the Open Dental component that serves the API from your own server — is running, then forward the line you want covered: a tracking number, your after-hours line, or overflow from your main number. We load your hours, providers, operatories, scheduling rules and the answers your team already gives, and you listen to test calls and correct the script before it takes a live one. There is no data migration, no conversion, and no software on operatory machines.
No. Open Dental stays where it is and stays your source of truth — this connects to it over the documented API and writes into the schedule you already use. There is no data migration and no parallel schedule to reconcile.
No — not on Open Dental. Open Dental's API supports creating and reading appointments, but not appointment status updates or cancellation, so the AI doesn't try. A caller asking to move or cancel is identified, their request is written down, and it goes to your team; a person makes the change in Open Dental.
No — it uses Open Dental's documented API only, with an API key you issue and can revoke. Open Dental publishes trust tiers describing how third-party vendors connect to practice data, and that list is worth reading on their site; what we can tell you about our own connection is that it goes through the documented API and holds no direct database connection.
The request goes to your team with what the AI collected — who the caller is, what they asked for, and a callback number — so someone can pick it up instead of working from a voicemail box. Clinical questions, billing disputes, emergencies and anything the caller escalates are routed rather than answered.
You can keep it. This does not require turning eServices off. There is overlap, since this also covers intake forms with insurance card images and self-scheduling. Whether that overlap is worth consolidating is a decision to make after you've seen both running, not on day one.
We sign a BAA, and PHI is encrypted at the field level at rest. Access is scoped to your practice, and the Open Dental API credentials you issue stay yours to revoke at any time.
If you run Open Dental and you're losing calls, you don't have to switch systems. This answers the phone, answers the common questions, and books new appointments into your live Open Dental schedule through the documented API. It doesn't change appointment status and it doesn't cancel — Open Dental's API doesn't support those, and they stay manual for your team.

You keep Open Dental. This answers the phone when your front desk can't, handles the questions your team gets asked most — hours, location, insurance accepted, new patients — and writes new appointments into your live Open Dental schedule through Open Dental's documented API. It does not change appointment status and does not cancel appointments; Open Dental's API doesn't support those, so those requests go to your team.
